Picher Oklahoma:Larry Roberts, the corners of his white Mercury Grand Marquis in the empty parking lot of the tiny cafe, G & J’s Gorillas Cage, and cruises in the space near the front door. red and white metal finishes restaurant faded and rusted, and the light-lined roadside sign has been dark for many years. Hand-painted posters in the windows advertising Burger Basket, corn dogs, and two or crook, “the last place in Picher! And yes, we’re open! ” When it closed in March, the gorilla cage was the only restaurant left in Picher, Oklahoma. Roberts is to make sure that the owners have cleared it for demolition. Now they feel pushed out. “This is an outrage,” says Joyce. “But we can not change it, so we move on.”

Picher jumped as the 20 th century Boomtown-”buckle” of the mountain belt that ran through Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. The ground beneath him is a big part of lead bullets for the U.S. in World Wars I and II and enough zinc in the literal sense, strengthen the construction of the American suburbs. These raw materials were used to create a strong, water-resistant metal alloys, better batteries, and dietary supplements-material base of modern society. Population reached 14,000 in 1926. When I lived dried up in 1970, mining companies have left. Picher eventually became a Superfund site, and half a decade ago, the state government offered residents an average of $ 55 per square foot to flee their homes. By September 2009, police had been disbanded and the government dissolved. Picher was a dead city.

In addition, several people refused to leave. Roberts can not understand why someone would abandon the relocation of the money it offers. “Most people have improved themselves through this process,” he says. “Now there are only radical left.”

Apocalypse is already here, just unevenly distributed. Urbanization has lured more people to the bustling metropolis, but very little thought was given to what happens when these towns failed. Over time, the basic systems and processes of civilization from lead mining to offshore drilling in the car commuting, slowly poisoning us. Electrical network blackout, the climate warms, and industrial accidents devastate ecosystems and cities alike. For all the famous cities with thousands of years of continuity, Paris, London, Cairo, Athens, Rome, Istanbul, most cities just stop. Picher is not just another Boomtown bankrupt. It symbolizes what happens when the modern city is dying: a few people to stay, trying to hold on to what they can. These new settlers trying to reclaim a vacant lot at the end of the world.
